MISFILLED PRESCRIPTIONS

As a Florida consumer and a patient, we trust others to provide us with the correct information and the right diagnosis. At a pharmacy, a patient expects that a pharmacist will fill their prescription medication with the medication they need. However, it is possible that a pharmacist may make a mistake, causing you to go home with the wrong medication. Whether misfilled prescriptions happen at the local pharmacy you’ve been going to for years or a large national chain pharmacy, your health could be in serious jeopardy if you are given the wrong medication.

The reason for the error is often a lack of communication between a physician – your doctor – and the pharmacist. A doctor could prescribe one medication, but your prescription could be filled with a different drug. Perhaps the misfilled prescriptions were not written legibly, or the telephone conversation between the physician’s office and the pharmacy was not heard correctly. Maybe it was a simple human error in filling the wrong prescription because two medications have a similar spelling.
